Innovation and sustainability to welcome pilgrims in the Eternal City
In preparation for the Jubilee of 2025, Acea renews its commitment to Rome and Vatican City with projects that combine innovation and tradition.
From the artistic lighting of the Colonnade of St. Peter to the activation of new Water Houses, each initiative combines technology and sustainability to better welcome the faithful and expand services available to all citizens.
In the beating heart of Vatican City, the Colonnade of St. Peter now shines with renewed splendour thanks to the Acea Group’s interventions.
Eighteen historical lamps, which have adorned the portico since 1855, tell the story of their new evolution: from gas lighting, converted to electricity in 1912, to today’s integration of 54 next-generation LED projectors.
Thanks to the interventions of the Acea Group, Via della Conciliazione has been transformed into a true path of light, guiding the faithful towards St. Peter’s Basilica. The twenty-four historical lamps, renewed with advanced LED fittings, create an evocative light trail that symbolically accompanies pilgrims. The project also extends to surrounding areas, such as Piazza Pio XII with its sixteen chandeliers, as well as Largo Alicorni and Largo del Colonnato.
The 140 statues of the Bernini’s Colonnade are illuminated with a new light thanks to 280 LED projectors, the result of a cutting-edge intervention by Areti. This solution of light architecture combines sustainability and innovation: the projectors highlight the details of these masterpieces, while a remote-control system ensures optimal management, balancing energy efficiency with respect for the artistic heritage.
A symbol of life and hospitality, water becomes the true protagonist of the Jubilee through a project that combines sustainability and service.
Designed to promote waste reduction and provide a valuable service, Acea's Water Houses are structures created for the distribution of free drinking water.
They will support pilgrims along the main paths of the Jubilee.
Twelve water houses have been activated, while two iconic water houses will be installed in Viale Vaticano and Piazza della Città Leonina on the initiative of the Acea Group.
During the Jubilee of 2025, from April 25 to 27, a special event dedicated to teenagers will take place. It will offer a unique occasion for personal and spiritual growth for young people. Vatican City will welcome thousands of participants aged 12 to 17,
some of whom will have the chance to meet Pope Francis and receive the Sacrament of Confirmation - a symbolic embrace between the Church and youth.
Acea’s support to the Jubilee of Teenagers highlights the Group’s commitment to the citizens of the future. In this context, the Group has been actively engaged for years in the education of younger generations through dedicated initiatives, such as Acea School – Water Education, a program developed in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Merit.
